Just one image
My story begins in a very classical way: From early ages on I was hooked on photography and very soon on film as well. To capture and share my perception of the world surrounding us with all its vividness, permanent change and as well its bright and its dark sides. To tell stories as people always did. I chose the image as my medium to tell stories. Just one image that can tell more than thousand words, that is why I make film.
Transforming words into pictures
From 2006 until 2012 I studied in Ludwigsburg at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg. Besides many other great people I had the pleasure to learn from Slawomir Idziak (Three Colors Blue, Black Hawk Down, etc.). He held a seminar with the meaningful title “Transforming words into pictures”. And that is my approach on cinematography. Not only to show what is written in the script, but to create pictures, that visualise the character’s emotion and which bring the idea behind that written word to life.
Not “beautiful” but right
In 2008 I attended the Parisian film school La Fémis. What I learned from the French even more is to rely on the effect of the right image. For me an image shall be intense, impressive and atmospheric. Exquisite and yet truthful in its style, significant in its composition. Not necessarily “beautiful”, but right. Right to express the vision for which it was created. Either with a message or a mood, as long as it touches the audience it is right.
